Maine APEX Teaming Up with MDOL & SWDB on United Free Training Event

Posted on July 29, 2026 | News

Maine manufacturers and defense contractors now have access to a valuable new workforce development resource. The Maine Department of Labor and the Maine State Workforce Development Board (SWDB) have established the Defense & Manufacturing Training Fund, a program that reimburses eligible employers up to $8,000 per employee for training investments that build skills in Maine’s defense shipbuilding and advanced manufacturing industries.

Funded through a $7.9 million grant from the U.S. Department of Labor, the Training Fund is designed to help employers strengthen and expand their workforce by investing in the training of both new and existing employees. The program supports high-demand occupations, including skilled trades, advanced manufacturing, AI and digital skills, while also encouraging registered apprenticeships and strengthening partnerships between employers and training providers.

This is an excellent opportunity for eligible businesses to reduce the cost of workforce training while building the skilled workforce needed to remain competitive. Learn more about the Defense & Manufacturing Training Fund, including eligibility requirements and qualifying training opportunities, by visiting the Work Source Maine’s Defense & Manufacturing Training Fund webpage.
